The family has owned elephants since the 1960’s. In 1979 Mr Sam Samarasinghe (1939 – 1991) an animal lover opened the estate to the public as Club Concept, since then guests have been able to interact with elephants by riding, bathing and feeding. Since MEF’s inception, care and a home has been provided to more than 80 elephants. Today, over 6 elephants ranging in age from 25-60 years are either temporarily or permanently residing at MEF.

Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Sri Lankan hill country. Visit the Dutch Fort and the city of Galle. As you walk through the streets you can see strong Dutch influences in the architecture, along with some old British residences and various mosques with Arabic touches. The main attraction of Galle no doubt is its ancient Fort, which instantaneously takes the visitors back to the Dutch Colonial era. One can bask in the picturesque views and the rich history while walking through the narrow, cobbled streets, relish a meal from one of the interesting restaurants within the Fort or enjoy the cool sea-breeze beneath the landmark lighthouse
